Why We Start with Breath

Every House of Futures class begins with a breathing exercise. It grounds the room. It softens resistance. It opens the door for learning.

In a world that demands constant productivity from Black and brown youth, starting with rest is radical. Before we teach anything technical, we regulate our nervous systems. That’s a skill just as valuable as contour.

This small ritual has changed the energy in our classrooms. It makes the space feel safe, and the students show up differently. Some even start leading the breathwork themselves. They remind each other: we start with breath.
